BiocardTM Celiac Test Kit
Now there is a simple, accurate way to determine if you are suffering from celiac disease. For the first time in Canada, Health Canada has approved the BiocardTM Celiac Test Kit, a do-it-yourself fingertip blood test that can detect the presence of certain antibodies in the blood -- an indication that the body is fighting gluten.
The Biocard test, distributed by 2G Pharma Inc., gives you accurate screening results in 10 minutes.
While this easy, patient-friendly blood test gives a high degree of certainty that you are either developing celiac disease or already have celiac disease, it's only the first step toward a definite diagnosis.
The second step is small bowel biopsy, performed by a gastroenterologist, which will show if there's been damage to the small intestine. (Sounds worse than it is.) While the combination of blood test and biopsy is the routine way to check, keep in mind that you may get a false negative if your diet has been gluten-free before the tests. This can make the intestinal inflammation less obvious on the biopsy and affect the blood test.
